The whole scenario of this book was pretty much a stretch for me in the believability department. A school was about to close it's doors and the teachers met and decided the only thing that could save the school was a donation from a mega-rich benefactor, and low and behold the said benefactor was waiting for schoolteacher Eliza when she arrived home. Leo Valente was an old beau she'd dumped after their brief affair; an affair that had started as a pick up in a bar and had been originally intended as a one night stand. Of course, he somehow knew the plight of her beloved school even though he lived in another country, and is willing to pay her one million pounds cash to save the school if she will be his daughter's nanny for one month.*SPOILER ALERT* Another reason I disliked the book was because I didn't like the heroine. She prostituted herself by offering to sleep with Leo for 250,000 pounds (he thought that was a bargain) during part of the month she was acting as nanny. Of course she justified it by seeing it as an altruistic act to renovate her fiancé's home. Turn's out he was her ex fiancé who had been left wheelchair bound in a vegetative state and she was guilty about it because it happened the same day she broke up with him. Of course Leo eventually added things up after seeing her wiping drool from the ex's mouth, and was generously disposed to give more money for the cause.

His Final Bargain Harlequin comics eBook Melanie Milburne Masami Hoshino Reviews
Tropey DOWNER with an angst fest with a martyred heroine and a brooding, bitter H with some Mommy issues.
Despite constant reminders and passionate clinches, I just did not feel the passion between the two.
Plot
The h met the H four years ago wherein a one night stand extends to a passionate three week affair. At the end of three weeks he asks her to marry him, but she says no, "I have a fiancee," and leaves. He takes the rejection really well. He has another one night stand that results in a little girl who's born blind and a now dead wife that was on the rebound from her ex-lover. Yes, we have a "Grace has Bob's dead wife's heart" plot, and is it depressing.
Meanwhile back in present day England, the martyr, I mean h, is worried about the school for disadvantaged children that she works in. In steps the H with an offer she can't refuse. He'll fund the school if she comes to Italy for a month to help with his plot moppet. What a coincidence as one of the h's co-workers was just saying how nice it would be to know a millionaire/billionaire.
She accepts, and the real fun or should we say arm twisting begins. Bottom line they have the hots for each other. Not a virginal heroine. The h is hiding a secret from the H, and he tosses out the occasional "gold-digger" epithet which doesn't make sense as she could have married him years earlier. He broods about her invisible and apparently long-suffering, cuckolded fiancee and what a cheater she is.
SPOILER Turns out her childhood sweetheart is essentially brain dead, and trapped in a wheelchair. She's known him and his mother since she was a teenager. She suffers a lot of guilt as he had his accident right after she broke off the engagement, and the accident was attributed to 'distracted driver". Ouch. Here we get into a plausible reason for martyrdom. It is fairly reasonable although the h does push the envelope a tad, but her guilt in causing the accident ties her to the guy and his mom who has always treated her like a daughter.
(End spoiler)]
Eventually the H discovers all because he spies on her. It's his turn to wallow in guilt. A reluctant HEA with his daughter adapting to her blindness and the H and the h do whatever they do.
Perhaps it is my mood, maybe the book, but this was a little on the dry and depressing side. I like my couples to have a spark of humor and connection.
Great story and well written. Once I started I could not put it down till I finished the book so I was happy I had the evening all to myself. recommend you start this on a free night.
A story after my own heart. Well rounded characters, love, commitments, sacrifice, understanding, all so very well integrated in the story. I loved the little girl and the sensitive way the h handles her. The H is a loving father and his deep and abiding love shines through. I could admire and respect both of them and that made the story truly worth reading.
Awww, I so recommend this story if you love second chance stories... well it's kind of a second chance story... Eliza and Leo met one night in a bar and they spent a wonderful time together resulting in Leo proposing. Eliza had to say no because she was engaged to another... Shoot time forward and Leo rides back into Eliza's life promising her half a mil which will mean her school can remain open... on the condition she will look after his daughter for the summer while the normal nanny is away.
Eliza's still engaged but goes because she wants to save her school. As soon as she arrives at Leo's home to start her post it's not long before both parties remember what they once had. Leo essentially buys Eliza but it's so clear he loves her. He's proud and stubborn but he loves her. Eliza loves Leo too but not willing to cut off her engagement for heartbreaking reasons. All cleverly woven into a top notch story.
Alessandra, Leo's daughter was very well written and a great addition to the story.
I'd so recommend this for second chance lovers, fans of Melanie Milburne and everyone else D
