The Rising Horde Volume One Sequel to "The Gathering Dead" eBook Stephen Knight

Another great read by Knight. Spoiler Alert.

This one starts with McDaniel's on the deck of a Coast Guard cutter, A cutter that pulled he and Regina Safire out of New York City. He and Regina are alive because 1st Sgt. Dave Gartrell used a flare to lead the dead away from McDaniel's and Regina. This enabled them to make it to the cutter.

McDaniel's wanted to go back for Dave but the Captain had him disarmed and told him that his men weren't trained for that and they were staying aboard and headed for Boston.

McDaniel's is frustrated but powerless to get back to New York City and search for Gartrell. A Gargrell he knows is alive via radio transmission. Gartrell didn't speak but he did click the transmit button so McDaniel's knows he's still alive.

First though, McDaniel's has to deliver Regina and the flash drive Wolf Safire left with him to the scientists at the USAMRID,, Known as the Rid for short. Its the research facility run by the US Army.

The flash drive has all of Safire's research and a possible cure for the plague that caused the dead to walk.

After saying goodbye to Earl and his daughter Zoe who are headed for Ohio and relatives, McDaniel's and Regina head for the Rid.

Once there they meet Col. Jeffries who's commanding officer of the Rid. He's a scientist and has been waiting for the Safire's flash drive.

Once McDaniel's passes Regina off at the Rid he's advised by Jeffries that he and McDaniel's have a meeting to attend. This meeting will reunite McDaniel's with Dave Gartrell, a Gartrell who survived his time in New York city, and throw the two of them into the fight for life in Texas.

So begins another damned fine read by Knight.

This one has McDaniels who's now a Colonel, Jaworski the commander of Spectra, Safire's company, a meeting with 1st Sgt. Gartrell who's now a Sergeant Major, a Gartrell who's McDaniels number two once again, a Gartrell who now knows how difficult it is to chose who lives and who dies, Rangers, Navy SEAL's, the walking dead, Jeffries who dies of a heart attack and comes back as a smart zed, millions of walkers headed for Texas, smarter zeds and McDaniel's, Gartrell and the team doing their best to stay alive.

Five Stars and then some.

The Rising Horde Volume One Sequel to "The Gathering Dead" eBook Stephen Knight Reviews

I will be concise in my review of this novel and its second part (Volume Two) and avoid spoilers as much as I can. I liked reading this novel, but it was a real let down in comparison to its predecessor, "The Gathering Dead." This sequel has an entirely different pace, point of view, and theme. Instead of being about survival of a small group of people (the plot of the original two-part novel), this one is about a long, slow build up to a final confrontation between man and zombie. That slow build up is entirely about the placement and use of modern military weapons to guard a single facility. While interesting in some ways (and perhaps it would be more so to a military junkie), I kept thinking while I was reading this two-part sequel that is isn't at all up to the quality of the first story. Also, there were so many plot holes that I got tired of reading them. All this mess led to one thing--the nature of the zombies (their resilience and intelligence) is such that modern weapons and tactics aren't up to the threat. So, what then? Well, the end result of the story is that humanity has just one chance...because the zombie threat has only one real weakness. Also, I will say that the conclusion of the story (i.e., specifically what happens to Gartrell and his family) was very disappointing. Because this character was so well defined in the earlier novel and novella, this ending fell entirely flat for me. I was left thinking, "darn, well that was a waste of time then, wasn't it?" I can say this was disappointing because I'm pretty sure that's not the thought that the author intended his readers to have. If it was his intention, then I suggest he reread his earlier work (Gathering and Left).
Wow... just wow... and I am going to start my review of the second sequel the exact same way considering I have read them both within the past 24 hrs because they were so good I just couldn't put them down!

Stephen Knight has hit it out of the ballpark with this series - especially with the sequels. I really enjoyed the Gathering Dead but to be truthful, it was a lot like other zombie books - military has to come in and rescue the scientist that has the potential cure for the zombie virus and then ends up fighting their way out to save the world. It was well written but it wasn't completely unique.

In "The Rising Horde" sequel, Mr Knight takes the zombie element and then takes it a step further and also turns it into a complete military campaign, complete with members of every service unit except the marines (I haven't figured out why they didn't get to come play too?).

SPOILER ALERT IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE GATHERING DEAD!! And if you haven't, what are you waiting for?? Go ahead, buy it, read it... I will wait for you to finish.. you back now?

Cord is brought into a meeting of all the high level military command at the start of the book to share his story of what it really is like dealing with the zombies. Guess who walks in all dirty, smelly, but alive?? That's right - Dave Gartrell! Dave, who sacrified himself to lead off the zombies so that Cord could save the Dr, the data, and the rest of the people in the Gathering managed to make it 72 hrs in NY before being rescued! He has come straight from the front line to give his story as well. Lots of scoffing from one of the commanders when they share the information that some of these zombies actually retain some level of intelligence like using weapons and even keys to open doors but others listen intently and believe. Then comes the new assignment - Cord and Dave will be assigned to the team that will be responsible for securing and defending a pharmaceutical research and manufacturing facility right outside of Odessa, TX. That plant will be humanities hope for survival because they will manufacture the vaccine for the zombie virus if the scientists are able to develop one.

The new characters introduced are a great bunch consisting of all the special ops teams and their higher level commanders, all under the umbrella of Colonel Stanislaw Jaworski. Jaworski is a laid back Air Force officer on the surface but has the strength to make the hard decisions when it comes to the mission which is to secure the base and protect the scientists at all costs. Cord is his second in command and responsible for making sure that the "base" that they are developing will be secure enough to repel the zombies. Dave is Cord's sargent major - that makes for some interesting tension considering Dave almost shot Cord in the first book and still hates him.

The author does a wonderful job of making all the characters come to live for the reader. The dialogue is realistic and flows so well that you actually feel that you are standing next to the soldiers and taking part of the conversation. He also developed each character enough that they don't "feel" secondary - you know them, you like them, you respect them. They are part of the team and the author draws you in so that you are also part of the same team. I laughed out loud at the "insults" that flew between the members of the different branches and the nicknames and stories behind them. It was just so descriptive..

While there are still zombies - and LOTS of surprises about the SMART zombies - Volume one deals mainly with the set up of the fortifications, the "team building", and the preparations for zombies headed their way.

At the same time, we have side stories of the fall of the towns around Texas and other parts of the country. We also have the "human" side of exploring the characters and what drives them as we learn about Dave's time in NY, the status of their families, and the fate of Odessa as well as other people in the path of the zombies.

If you read one zombie book (or books - you can't stop without reading the next sequel) - then this is the one to download today!
